So we score the signals those engines look for — schema markup, quotable facts, clean HTML, internal links, author trust. Fix those signals and the citations generally follow. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the work of being readable, quotable and attributable to AI answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google's AI Overviews. It overlaps heavily with classic SEO and then diverges on what it rewards.
An answer engine does not return ten links. It reads sources, synthesises one answer, and sometimes cites what it used. Ranking is no longer the goal; being the thing quoted inside the answer is. A site can sit at position three on Google and never once be mentioned by an assistant summarising the same question.
Citability is the property that decides it: discrete, checkable statements — a number, a definition, a step, a direct answer under a question-shaped heading — that can be lifted intact without the surrounding paragraph. Marketing prose that means nothing out of context is nearly impossible to quote.
Entity clarity is whether a machine can tell who you are with confidence: one consistent business name, a real address, a stable identifier in your structured data, and the same facts about you repeated the same way everywhere. Ambiguity here is why an engine will describe a competitor instead of you.
Classic search rewards a page that is authoritative overall and forgives a great deal of presentation. Answer engines are far less forgiving about how content is delivered. Most of them do not execute JavaScript when they fetch a page, so a site that renders its content client-side can rank respectably on Google and arrive at an assistant as an empty shell.
The other divergence is freshness and provenance. A link-rich page with no author, no date and no sources can still rank; an engine deciding what to cite treats those absences as reasons to prefer someone else. That is why trust signals carry weight here that a purely ranking-focused audit would not give them.

AI search accounts for 45% of the overall grade; classic SEO accounts for the other 55%. Within that 45%, the five modules carry these weights on a standard page. A grade of 90% or above is an A, 75% a B, 60% a C and 40% a D.

No. Answer engines build their own view of a page and frequently cite sources that are not top-ranked results. A clearly written, well-structured page with checkable facts can be quoted while a higher-ranking competitor is ignored, which is why the AI-search half is scored separately from classic SEO.
Most answer engines fetch a page without executing JavaScript. A site that assembles its content client-side arrives as an almost empty document, so it can rank respectably on Google — which does render — and still be unusable to an assistant. This is the single most common reason a healthy-looking site scores badly on AI accessibility.
Monthly is enough for most sites. Answer engines change what they favour without notice and re-crawl on their own schedule, so a score is a snapshot rather than a fixed property. The GEO Monitor plan re-runs these five modules every month and emails you when the score drops.
It is cheap and it does no harm. It is a plain-text summary of what a site is and where its important pages are, served at /llms.txt for AI crawlers. Adoption is still uneven across engines, so treat it as a small hedge rather than a fix — this site publishes one.
